JESUS HIGHWAY SIGNS

John 7:7 ” The world… hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.

I just returned from a spring break getaway with my wife and 3 kids. We hit the highway and travelled west through Ontario, stopping in at Niagara Falls for a few days. On our way back, I noticed several Christian signs on different highways, some are well manufactured and intentionally errected, some even appear on billboards, and some are just amaturely spray painted on rocks. I suppose it’s a familiar thing that is expected and doesn’t usually grab my attention so much. However, this time, something struck me after seeing about 3 or 4 of them on a single highway. I noticed that they always have this kind of theme… “Jesus Forgives!” or “God Loves You!”. Some of these signs have been there for years, it doesn’t appear that anyone has tried to remove them or tamper with them, and I thought about that…. and I wondered how long they would remain if they said something like “God Is Angry With The Wicked Everyday.” or in the words of Jesus, “Unless You Repent You Will Perish”. Probably wouldn’t even last long on a remote dirt side-road. But “God Loves You” is high up in the air on every major highway for years.

And it all makes sense… the soft signs are non-offensive. Siners like to hear that God Loves them. The “loving” God and Jesus are popular in our narcisistic society, they pose no threat or cause no offense to those who are self-absorbed. But people hate the justice and indignation of God. They don’t want to be reminded that they will be held to account for their sin, that they will face a wrathful God who loves righteousness and hates evil. The “God Loves You” signs make them feel good about themselves. This is the age of relativistic idolatry. As long as God is loving and friendly, they can accept Him, but they want nothing to do with a righteous, holy, and just judge. That kind of sgn wouldn’t last more tha a day on any highway in Canada, bnecause people hate that kind of God. They just want the love god!

John 3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

Romans 8:7 …the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
